The free Encircle Home Inventory product ended on December 17, 2025, and the data behind it is no longer reachable. To be clear up front: Encircle the company is still very much in business — it sells to restoration contractors and insurance adjusters, and only the free consumer app was retired. This page covers what happened, what you can still do with an export if you made one, and how to get a claim-ready inventory back.
That last point is worth sitting with for a second, because it explains the shutdown better than "the app failed" does. The consumer inventory app was never the product being sold — it was a free companion to software sold to contractors and adjusters. When the company narrowed its focus, the free side product was the thing that went.
Good — the Excel file is the useful one. A spreadsheet carries your item list, not your photos, so the plan is to bring the list across in one go and re-shoot the photos as you walk the house.
Then the data is gone, and no app can recover it — including this one. What is left is rebuilding, so the only useful question is how to make that take an evening instead of a weekend.
Work room by room, not category by category. Stand in one room, photograph everything worth more than roughly $50, and move on. Categorising while you walk is what turns this into a multi-weekend project that never gets finished.
Let the camera do the typing. Photograph an item and the AI fills in the name, category and description, which you can correct in a tap. The photograph is also the evidence — a typed list without images is much weaker in a claim than a list where every line has a picture attached.
Photograph receipts and serial numbers while you are there. Serial numbers on the back of electronics and a receipt in a drawer are the two things nobody can reconstruct after a loss, and both take seconds now.
Do the expensive rooms first. If you stop halfway, you want to have stopped after the living room and the home office, not after the linen cupboard.

Encircle details reflect the free consumer Home Inventory product as it stood before it was discontinued, including the one-photo-per-item limit users reported. Encircle's paid products for restoration professionals are a different product and are still sold.
It's the right question to ask, and anyone who answers it with a promise is guessing. Nobody can guarantee a product outlives you. What can be guaranteed is that you are never locked in: export your full inventory to CSV and a PDF report whenever you want, without waiting for a shutdown notice to make you do it. Keep a copy somewhere you control and the question stops being frightening.
The structural difference is worth naming too. Encircle's consumer app was free because it was a companion to software sold to contractors and adjusters, and it was cut when that business narrowed its focus. Home and small-business inventory isn't a side project here — it's the product.
